Performance Appraisals - How to Measure Staff Performance

In any business, the number one asset is your staff. It also happens to be your biggest expense and regardless of your type of business, its the people that can and will make or break it. From this point of view, your staff is the number one area to focus on if you want to improve your business. The process of performance evaluations is often misused, but in essence its designed to help both the business and the workers.
One of the most difficult aspects of performance appraisals is the actual process of measuring each and every member of staff. For the most part, there aren't any concrete measures and much of this process relies on personal opinions and personal observations.
the only way to do proper evaluations is to get subjective opinions out of the way as much as possible. You need to find a way to measure staff in a non personal way and find a process that can distinguish the person from the work.
How can this be done?
The latest trend in performance appraisals is guide your staff to set their own goals that is in harmony with the company goals. be setting concrete goals for themselves, there is something definite to measure them against. Evaluating staff purely on a financial basis is a big problem and its an issues that I would advise you to stay away from. Yes, the bottom line is important but it is not the be all and end all. The real focus should be on each and every staff member's contribution to the business.
